Ambient surface ozone was monitored for one year at a series of seven sites along an elevation gradient in Boulder County, Colorado, from 1600 m above sea level (ASL) to 3500 m ASL. Local variability of ozone decreased with elevation and distance from local sources, validating the assumption that the results of the study are representative of the Colorado Front Range. The Northern Hemisphere tropospheric spring ozone peak was strongly apparent and affected ozone at all elevations. Ozone consistently increased with elevation during winter. A diurnal cycle was observed only at the low-elevation urban site during the winter; ozone concentrations at the remaining six sites changed on a multi-day time scale, indicating regional background behavior as the primary factor for wintertime ozone. A monotonic increase in ozone with elevation was not observed in summer; ozone behavior in the mid-elevations was driven by decreased daily ozone production with increased elevation. Even the highest elevation site was influenced by the urban air pollution in summer.
